Attempting to exploit the nightmare kidnap victim Jaycee Dugard miraculously survived, the drum beat for opportunist$ hasn't changed one iota even after the murder of JonBenet Ramsey was so over-baked and over-criticized, as her parents were (falsely and) over-accused in prime time.

Jaycee's family spokesperson Nancy Seltzer said "a plan to make a movie about Dugard's life was "exploitive, hurtful and breathtakingly unkind."

"There are plenty of movies that depict the lives of real life people, whether they be historical figures or have inspirational stories. But it’s the movies that are based on real life tragedies that can have a negative effect on the people who were involved...

The whole situation is very reminiscent of the JonBenet Ramsey made-for-TV movies “Perfect Murder, Perfect Town” and “Getting Away with Murder.” Considering that the latter film depicted the parents as the culprits, even though the two were both cleared at the time the film was released, it’s not hard to see that some filmmakers don’t stop to take in account the family’s feelings and instead pursue whatever angle they want (or rather what angle would attract the most viewers). After all, getting the approval of the family would take months if not years, and by then, the movie wouldn’t come out while people are still thinking about the crime and therefore, not make as much money.[...read more]
