line item in the DA's budget

Positioning to derail any pregnant questions about his take on prior decisions in JonBenet's case, incumbent DA Stan Garnett intends to analyze resources allocated to the investigation within his agency's budget.

It would be interesting to understand what impact JonBenet's case currently has on the DA's $4.5M budget--

Boulder's DA comes full circle
Stan Garnett returns to prosecution after years in private practice.
By Howard Pankratz

Stan Garnett, the incoming Boulder district attorney, would like to dispel a myth:

"Boulder is not nearly as liberal as people think, particularly about issues of public safety," said Garnett, who starts work Jan. 13. "People expect the law enforcement community to keep them, their homes, their cars and their families safe."

...He noted that in the case of unsolved homicides, for instance, there are all kinds of issues that have to be looked at carefully.

The community, Garnett said, has to let the people involved — the police, the district attorney and others — do their jobs in such complex situations.

"And sometimes that is a problem," he said.

One unsolved case is the murder of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey.

Of the Ramsey murder, Garnett said he has two primary goals.

"The first one is that I'm not going to revisit anybody's decisions on that case."

Secondly, Garnett said, he will look at the Ramsey case from a "management perspective."

When he gets into office, he said, he will look closely at what kinds of resources are being devoted to the Ramsey case and make decisions about whether an office of that size should continue spending the county's money on the investigation..."
