I am on a mission. My mission is to find John Mark Karr! Karr is a former murder suspect and self-professed pedophile.

The name John Mark Karr may sound familiar to you already. Karr falsely confessed to the 1996 killing of child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey. But before you chalk Karr up to being just a nutbag, please read what I have to say.

John Mark Karr, also known as Daxis, is now transgendered and assuming the name Alexis Valoran Reich (yes, as in the Third Reich!). He is reportedly living in a woman's homeless shelter in Seattle and seeking a teaching or nanny job. And he has a new victim.

While many of his victims over the years have been too scared to come forward, Samantha Spiegel has bravely come forward now to stop John Mark Karr. Samantha is speaking out not only with intention of protecting herself, but with the goal of educating others as to how and why Karr is such a potential danger/threat to society.

I will share with you the details of his threats and behavior in the next week when Diane Dimond and I co-author an article exposing the true John Mark Karr/Alexis Reich. From the outside it looks like it has been a wild ride for attorney Jeffrey Scott Shapiro, starting with taking on his employer back when he was a tabloid reporter covering the JonBenet Ramsey murder investigation. He contradicted the media persecution of the Ramsey's and proposed the possibility that an unknown male may have killed JonBenet before anyone else was willing to whisper that possibility that has since been proven true. Now in another bold move, he is stepping up to cure the tarnished reputation of our past President George W Bush. Yes, I think W really needs some help in this area, however doing so may be risky in opening another can of worms many folks remain incredibly passionate about. It's a tall order in front of Shapiro and I have to give him credit; the guy has stamina and guts. Admirable. At the same time I have to wonder what advice he might have for undoing the years of demonization of the innocent parents and brother of a brutally murdered 6 year old - -

Partly due this blog but mostly from other relationships, I've been exposed to many of the theories and conclusions about JonBenet's murder from those interested in, close to or actually hands-on working JonBenet's case. Beyond what the evidence and multiple instances of foreign DNA left at the crime scene screams so loudly, with a few exceptions I am not exceptionally drawn to a particular brand of speculation. With the best of intentions but sadly enough, many theorists and even so called subject matter experts may not be aware that their theory is not unique, nor perfectly unique to the crime. From Rubacher's poorly resourced publication to that classroom pedophile that tried to pass off his erotic fantasies as fact back in 2006 and every who-done-it notion in between, there is not one notion out there there that hasn't been confessed, broadcast, documented or opined previously. Tomorrow at the High Court in Edinburgh there will be a hearing on the Luke Mitchell case. It is his final hearing on an appeal. After this it is not simply that there will be no more appeals. If this appeal fails, it is illegal for him to file any more appeals and it is illegal for any lawyer to file an appeal on his behalf. His Nobile Officium petition failed. His appeals have all fallen on deaf ears. He is serving a life sentence.

For those of you who may not follow Scottish crime quite as closely as I do, here is a brief summary of the case.

Fourteen year old girl raped and murdered in the woods. Police immediately suspect the fourteen year old boyfriend, Luke Mitchell, despite the fact that the murder scene reveals a violent and bloody struggle and Luke Mitchell is without stains or injuries of any sort. Police are so certain of their snap decision that they leave the corpse out in woods overnight uncovered and unguarded thereby allowing rains to wash away forensic evidence. Crime scene reveals the biological fluids of three men, none of the fluids are those of Luke Mitchell. The three males are neither arrested nor charged. One of the three males radically alters his appearance including cutting his own hair shortly after the murder but police only are interested in Luke Mitchell.

Victim had been grounded and was expected to be at home where a violent and unstable brother dwells and where the three males visit from time to time. Victim's family claim that their daughter had been suddenly un-grounded and left the home at a time that might implicate Luke Mitchell. Victim's family also claim they made a sudden visit to a graveyard which gives them a place where they would not have had any witnesses.

Police leaks provoke a media frenzy about the tattooed 14 year old. Articles mention links to Satanism and Marilyn Manson whose website bears depictions of a corpse with its throat slashed. Defendant's mother is arrested and charged with perverting the course of justice and threatened with a perjury charge which carries a seven year sentence.

Defense lawyer at trial appears ignorant of significant facts, offers no countervailing forensic evidence or dna analysis and generally appears to be accepting of prosecutorial allegations including the allegation that the semen of an uncharged male was on the victim's bra through a process of innocent transfer.

Well, the hearing is tomorrow. Anticipation is troubling me. I imagine its worse for the defendant's family though. Its difficult for the family to see their son doing a life sentence in prison for a crime he didn't do.

Anticipation. I imagine its also a bit difficult for the now 21 year old accused. He knows that although his Life Sentence carries "only" a twenty year minimum that he will serve his entire life in prison if he does not win this appeal.

Since the media frenzy after the 1996 death of JonBenet Ramsey I am pretty sure there have been several opinions from beauty pageant participants that those activates probably had little, if anything, to do with the murder. Based on the close knit, family oriented generally very small group settings it would be challenging for some creep to be stalking any one of the girls without being noticed by one of the attentive pageant moms. Not saying that didn't happen; the unknown Caucasian male that deposited his DNA in multiple locations on the body has yet to be identified. But only associating JonBenet's killer to pageants is just not any more likely than any other of the many activities the Ramsey's enjoyed as a family - -

In my last post I started to talk about how child pageant bashing began. I personally feel that this part of the topic needs to be handled with great care since I will be talking about the death of a child...people in the media started speculating on a motive for her murder and they found out she was a beauty queen.

People just assume that some random guy was following her around from a pageant and killed her. Worst of all, since our outfits are different from ballet, tap or whatever the public started to think that her mother focussed her into pageants and started to assume that her parents killed her.

I really don’t understand how people could have come to that conclusion. First of all, the outfits in ballet, cheerleading, gymnastics are just as reliving and we were just as much make-up as they do. Heck, in cheerleading you have little girls jumping around in short skirts wearing very heavy make-up.

"LOS ANGELES (CBS)...After he falsely confessed to the murder of JonBenet Ramsey, John Mark Karr was branded an attention seeker, not a violent predator.

But according to one woman, that's exactly what he is. She just filed a restraining order against him after he allegedly threatened to kill her.

"He said that if I got in the way of him and his little girls, he would have me hunted down and killed," said Samantha Spiegel.

Spiegel, 19, claims Karr threatened to kill her in a series of online conversations as recently as Sunday.

In one online conservation, he wrote: "I want to hurt you."

Spiegel wrote back: "you do?"

"If you deceive me I will kill you. I know where you live," he replied back.

According to a restraining order filed last week, Spiegel was concerned for her safety since Karr knew where she lived, where she goes to school and felt he "seriously threatened to hunt her down and kill her by any means necessary."

The stay away order is against Alexis Reich.

Molestation or Murder? Pleasure or Pain?

The pervert, when being tried by the criminal element who have been hard pressed by the police, asserts that the safecrackers and cardsharps are the true criminals for they choose to perform their deeds rather than work at a legitimate job, whereas he is driven to kill by something inside himself that he can not escape for no matter how fast he runs he finds that he is always chasing himself.

If we make laws that are so Draconian then we will be providing a pervert with an incentive to kill rather than to molest but allow his victim to live. I think however that the killer of JonBenet Ramsey always intended to kill her. The intruder was clearly willing to take risks in committing the crime, so if he had wanted to take flight and risk being caught by the police he would have done so. He enjoyed concocting a weird fantasy-related note in the form of a ransom demand. He enjoyed the image of the parents waiting by the phone in a maddening and futile frustration. He only seems to have applied the stun gun twice so perhaps he did not find it as enjoyable as he thought he would, but he did it for the purpose of enjoyment, not to compel some sort of compliance. After all, his victim was a tiny six year old girl and it makes no sense to think of the stun gun as an instrument related to compliance. It is an instrument of torture. It seems the bondage cords may have been part fantasy and posing, but his fantasies seem to relate to humiliation and the infliction of pain.

He molested JonBenet. He probably enjoyed his perverse activities but I fear his primary goal was to kill her. Given his enjoyment of inflicting pain and humiliation, I fear that the cord was repeatedly tightened and relaxed.

I do not think that the intruder was a pervert who chose to kill his victim in order to avoid being captured by the police. I think the intruder chose to kill his victim because he enjoyed killing. Should we seek the perpetrator in an abattoir? Or should we seek out reports of missing persons of high vulnerability such as streetwalkers and runaway youths? When Orson Welles made Citizen Kane he was advised to retire because he could never top that movie. Yet he kept trying. We tend to think of the JonBenet Ramsey murder as the ultimate in reprehensible conduct. After all, what arrest of a jerk in Thailand would ever have garnered four solid days of non-stop cable news coverage? So do you think the perpetrator retired or continued to make movies? Has he simply learned that making low-budget movies which do not garner any great publicity can be fun too? Is the killer of JonBenet Ramsey spending his time hiding out at the horrors of cockfights or dog fights? Or does he gain recurrent pleasure in an abattoir?

Does spelling count?

I wonder if my old age is making me less tolerant. I somehow just don't want to tackle an article in which the author can not even verify the correct spelling of a surname in a notorious murder case. Often we IDIs, as those who believe an intruder did it are often called, face criticism for refusing to even read much less give serious consideration to some of the utter tripe that is written on this case. Similarly, those who believe in flying saucers or multiple personalities often criticize non-believers for being too dismissive of various "evidence" that true-believers are fond of touting. The JonBenet Ramsey case has featured a handwriting "expert" whose qualifications consisted of experience as a sales clerk in a store that sold pens. Yet even that so-called expert, much beloved by the RDIs, managed to spell JonBenet's surname correctly.

So what should I make of the following? Is it worth my pondering this at all? Or should I simply dismiss from consideration any article wherein the author attempts to rope in some tangential reference to JonBenet Ramsey in order to buttress his arguments on a totally different topic?

"The scandals about sexually abusive priests ... [are] part of the fallout from a half-century of insidious sabotage by ultraliberal revisionists."

"The percentage of sexually abusive priests is notably higher among non-Catholic clerics and the number of offenders higher for secular schoolteachers -- a fact that the media persistently refuse to note."

"The present furor, though partly justified,..." (Did the author really say that the present furor over pedophile priests is but partly justified)?

"We condemn child pornography as criminal but applaud the parading of little girls, such as Jonbenet Ramsay, in beauty contests and teenage rock stars who do pole dances in concert before mobs of idolatrous children."

"Our violent reaction against pedophilia may be prompted by the ... mental equivalent of pedophilia that the media incessantly spew." (Ah,,, I get it. The author is asserting that the fault lies with the media not the pedophiles).

Frankly, I think I'll not bother with it and will simply move on to an email I've received concerning a mid-western blackjack player's legal action after the casino tried to bar him from playing because he is a card-counter who made sixty-five grand in two years while getting free drinks from lovely ladies. Ah,,, what a life! And much more fun than tackling the work of authors who refer to JonBenet "Ramsay".

The AP is reporting that Dr. Cyril Wecht actually performed the autopsies on Elvis Presley and JonBenet Ramsey. Never happened; a little fact checking, please. Having reported this inaccurately, I am not sure what to make about the legitimacy and facts of the entire article below surrounding the death of a Muslim activist during a raid by the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force in Detroit.

Not because I love Romantic Comedies, not because Mark Wahlberg is shirtless, and definitely not because The Office isn’t enough awkward Steve Carell humor for me. I’m going to see Date Night on Friday because I believe in Tina Fey. She makes me laugh, unexpectedly, sheepishly, loudly, thoroughly and consistently. She is, without question, one of the ten best comedians working today. She’s John Belushi doing Joe Cocker. She’s Richard Pryor killing on the mic. She’s Norm MacDonald cracking jokes about O.J. Simpson, Vince Vaughn standing on a diner table and Johnny Carson direct addressing his audience as K-Mart shoppers. I believe in Tina Fey because she makes me laugh, and that’s why, for the first time in my life, I’m going to see a comedy entirely because of its female star.

Barry Scheck

Looking back at what experts were retained by the Boulder investigation of the murder of JonBenet Ramsey, I have always wondered about Barry Scheck in light of his history of success on a defense team. someone once proposed that he was strategically retained by the prosecution so a future defense team could not leverage his expertise; I have a hard time believing that from an ethics perspective. But then his consultancy on JonBenet's case was pro-bono - -



Innocence Project co-founder to speak in Montgomery

Barry Scheck, attorney, DNA expert and co-founder of the Innocence Project, will speak on April 21 and 22 at the Town Hall Lecture Series, sponsored by the Montgomery Woman's Club.

He is best known as the DNA expert on the O.J. Simpson defense team. In addition, Scheck has served as an adviser to investigators of the JonBenet Ramsey murder and represented one of the Duke lacrosse players in a civil suit. His many years of landmark litigation set the standards for use of DNA evidence in courts throughout the country.

The Innocence Project, which Scheck created, is dedicated to using DNA evidence as a means to assist wrongly convicted individuals in overturning those convictions. In recent years, over 200 people have been exonerated and freed through post-conviction DNA testing.

The Ohio Innocence Project, which is based at the University of Cincinnati, recently wrote draft legislation which will require that in all serious crimes, DNA evidence must be preserved for five years in plea bargain cases and for thirty years if a person is found guilty. The bill found universal support and was passed by large majorities in both the Ohio House and Senate.

The Wednesday and Thursday morning lectures are held at the Montgomery Assembly of God. The Wednesday evening lecture takes place at Sycamore Junior High School.

Media Scrutiny versus Privacy

It seems that John Mark Karr a/k/a Alexis Reich has somewhat strange views concerning the right to privacy. After having voluntarily sent to a journalism professor a massive number of emails concerning an unsolved murder and having made statements concerning his claimed involvement with that murder, he now thinks that he should be considered to be simply a private citizen with some sort of absolute right to privacy. He seems to consider that he is a victim of a witch hunt and that he is being portrayed as an oddity.

Well, he is indeed an oddity. Let us not forget that he avoided incarceration in Sonoma County simply because the Sheriff's property clerk lost the laptop computer that had been seized. John Mark Karr thrust himself into the limelight and now wants to be left alone because he appears as an oddity in the harsh glare of those lights. Well, what did he expect the lights to reveal? Did he think he could make statements in front of television news cameras implicating himself in the murder of a helpless six year old girl and then he could simply fade away into oblivion?

Provocative article by Jeff Gamso on the presumption of innocence that mentions the parents of JonBenet Ramsey along with others that have been wrongfully convicted, or otherwise presumed guilty. In his write up, Gamso is specifically speaking to the Danny Brown travesty. Based on DNA evidence, in 2001 Brown was released from prison more than 18 years after being wrongfully convicted of aggravated murder. And like the parents of JonBenet Ramsey, even though today Danny is free from imprisonment, he still deals with extraordinary legal complications and lives under a looming cloud of suspicion --

"I've got to assume that it's coincidence that I read Gideon's eloquent and agonized take on the presumption of guilt from yesterday pretty much back to back with this morning's article by Jennifer Feehan in the Toledo Blade on Danny Brown...First, the short version of Gideon's post. (You should read the whole thing.)

The presumption of innocence, a bedrock principle of criminal justice systems the world over for generations, is really not that ambiguous or in doubt. . . .

It’s a catchy phrase: “innocent until proven guilty”. It nicely ties in the other core principles: the burden of proof is on the State; the defendant has a Constitutional right not to testify; each and every element must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. . . .

It’s all a lie. A big, bold-faced, wool over your eyes lie.

The presumption of innocence is dead, at least in practice. The real presumption, if you must, is that of guilt. Despite the Constitutional and historical directives to the contrary, the defendant “enjoys” a presumption of guilt from the moment of the institution of criminal proceedings...

One could jump in pretty much anywhere for an example.

As law enforcement in Mexico City now seeks a man for questioning in the homicide of 4 year-old Paulette Gebara Farah, both the circumstances of this case and public interest or outrage is much like 1996 and the JonBenet effect.

Paulette had been reported missing for 10 days when her little body was found stuffed in a garbage bag by her own bed, undiscovered by law enforcement - family - and those helping in the desperate search for the missing little girl that caused national attention.
